Research Discussion (Discussion Thread). Each unit students will locate, describe, apply, and discuss articles and research related to the chapter topic(s) being presented. Students should focus on recent research (within the last 5 years) presented in journal articles. In other words, the students should focus on primary sources, not secondary sources. The sources/ articles selected should not be duplicated, so it is advised that students review the discussion thread before they post their topic response.

This week we will be discussing research related to:

Chapter 8: Biopsychology, Cognitive Neuropsychology, and Clinical Neuropsychology
Chapter 10: Experimental and Quantitative Psychology.
Each student will have a main response composed of three parts.

The first part is a description of the research selection. While it may be tempting to post an article abstract, be sure to provide enough description that it will be clear to a person who does not have a copy of the selection in front of them. This part gives you practice on writing descriptions/ summarizing information.
The second part is an application of the selection. How can the information in the selection be applied to real-life problems/ situations? Additionally, this part should have unanswered questions about the topics. This part gives you practice making connections between research and applications, and critical thinking concerning the topic.
The third part is a citation for your source. Please use APA formatting (7th edition).

Each student will reply to two classmates in a meaningful way.

You must proofread your paper. But do not strictly rely on your computer’s spell-checker and grammar-checker; failure to do so indicates a lack of effort on your part and you can expect your grade to suffer accordingly. Papers with numerous misspelled words and grammatical mistakes will be penalized. Read over your paper – in silence and then aloud – before handing it in and make corrections as necessary. Often it is advantageous to have a friend proofread your paper for obvious errors. Handwritten corrections are preferable to uncorrected mistakes.

Use a standard 10 to 12 point (10 to 12 characters per inch) typeface. Smaller or compressed type and papers with small margins or single-spacing are hard to read. It is better to let your essay run over the recommended number of pages than to try to compress it into fewer pages.

Likewise, large type, large margins, large indentations, triple-spacing, increased leading (space between lines), increased kerning (space between letters), and any other such attempts at “padding” to increase the length of a paper are unacceptable, wasteful of trees, and will not fool your professor.

The paper must be neatly formatted, double-spaced with a one-inch margin on the top, bottom, and sides of each page. When submitting hard copy, be sure to use white paper and print out using dark ink. If it is hard to read your essay, it will also be hard to follow your argument.
