The researcher takes a special focus on the impact of substance abuse on mental health. A key focus is on the impact of marijuana use in the Caribbean. The issue of marijuana abuse is particularly important to the Caribbean as it has a focus on the vulnerable populations in the region especially adolescents. The cultural norm in society is a key element that encourages the use of marijuana as well as the consideration of legalization in many areas. The research finds that substance abusers are also exposed to other aspects such as physical and verbal abuse. These aspects place a stress level on the psychological well-being of an individual leading to alterations in mental well-being.

The researchers have a key objective to investigate the correlation of disorders as they relate to the use of alcohol and other drugs to the presence of symptoms of mental disorders. The researchers have a focus on 128 users who are positioned in a psychosocial care center in Sao Paulo. Using a univariate and multiple linear regression model, the researchers find that the symptoms of internalizing and externalizing symptoms are significant. The key symptoms that relate to crime and violence are found to be significant. A key conclusion from the research is the high relationship that exists between alcohol use and severe mental health symptoms and crime. The socially vulnerable environment of alcohol and drug abusers is a key aspect that is pointed out in the research that should be considered for further analysis.

The researchers have a focus on the investigation of the co-occurring substance abuse and mental health conditions as well as other medical disorders. The study has a focus on over 5640 emergency department patients that are aged 19 to 60 years. The location of the study is an inner-city hospital. The patients chosen have behavioral health issues. About 23% are found to suffer from major depression and have average mental health functioning. There is 15% who are found to have alcohol and other substance dependencies over a period of 12 months. Comorbidity of dependency and major depression is found to be high. The key findings suggest the difficulty that arises when treating the patients as the behavioral health conditions complicate diagnosis and treatment. There is a need for an appropriate treatment strategy for patients found to have mental health conditions and substance abuse in emergency departments.

Treatment of people with a diagnosis of multiple mental disorders is a difficult process that looks at the integration of treatment approaches. The complexity in health care treatment arises due to a need to treat mental health illness and substance dependency disorder which are often highly difficult. The researchers have a key focus on the exploration of the impact of non-integrated care of both mental health and substance abuse dependency on the occurrence of relapses on patients. The study has a key finding that the correlation between concurrent treatment and the number of relapses does not have a key interconnection. However, there is a key realization that mental illness co-occurs with substance abuse. In this way, there is a key suggestion to social workers to develop mechanisms to effectively treat clients with co-occurrence of mental illness and substance abuse.
